In Canada, the equivilant of 30-40% of the food produced annually along the value chain is wasted. Much of this food ends up in landfills or as compost. This waste has been estimated to be worth approximately $31 billion each year. However, when all cost of food production are factored in, including land, water, transportion and energy, the food waste cost exceeds $100 billion annually.
